By Plane

Madrid 's International Airport (Aeropuerto de Barajas) is located 13 km north east of Madrid . Flights from the most important European and world cities arrive on a daily basis. Those who arrive in Madrid by plane can easily get to the centre of the city by metro or bus. By metro, just take the line number 8 until the Mar de Cristal station, and continue with the line number 4 to the centre of the city. There are two main train stations in Madrid , both easily accessed from one another by metro: The Chamartin Train Station is where most trains from France , Bilbao , Barcelona , Seville , Saragossa and regional trains arrive and depart from. The other station is the Atocha where trains from and to Andalusia , Extremadura, and Portogallo are serviced. The Spanish high speed train (AVE) that connects Madrid and Seville in only two and a half hours leaves from the Atocha train station. The entire Spanish Rail network is maintained by the RENFE.

If you are coming from the Pays Vasco, you need to take the A1. From Andalusia , take the A4. From France , take the N II . Finally, from Portugal , take the N V.

HOW TO GET AROUND:

METRO

A network of 11 lines that operate from 6AM until 1:30AM makes of the underground the fastest and most convenient way to get around Madrid . The network arrives virtually to all places in Madrid , and it is linked with the urban rail network (Trenes de Cercanias) that connects the surrounding towns of the capital. If you are planning to use the metro system during your stay, we recommend that you buy the "Metrobus" that allows you to use either the metro or the bus ten times.

Bus and Local Trains

The bus in Madrid runs from 6AM until midnight . You have to purchase you ticket inside of the bus. This service is provided by the EMT. The urban rail network (Trenes de Cercanias) are managed by the RENFE and covers short distances, unlike the normal network. In some cases, the local train can be boarded from the metro stations. Those special train stations are clearly labeled with the symbol for the "Trenes de Cercanias," the "CI."
